A Short Introduction to Coffee Roasters and Coffee Roasting

What is coffee roasting?

Coffee roasting is the process by which green coffee becomes that beautiful brown that we all know and love. Heat and movement play key roles in the roasting process. Heat ensure that the coffee  roasts and chemical reactions occur to change the flavor and texture of the beans. Movement, usually spinning in a drum, ensures an even roast.

What's the difference between a coffee roaster and a coffee shop?

A coffee shop is a place where you go to have a cup of coffee, but a roaster (or roastery) is a business that not only sells coffee, but roasts it as well. All of the coffee shops in this exhibit are also coffee roasters. They source the beans from suppliers and roast them, often in small batches, to ensure fresh cups of coffee for their customers.
